There are a variety of sensor sizes for medium-format cameras, and typical sizes range from around 43.8×32.9mm to 53.7×40.2mm. Due to their large image sensors, medium-format DSLR cameras are traditionally heavier and bulkier than their full-frame counterparts. The size of the camera’s sensor determines how much of this light is used to create the image. Because a sensor stores such valuable information, if there is a large camera sensor size, more information can fit, producing better quality images than smaller sensors. The size determines what you see through your camera’s viewfinder. The size of your camera sensor affects focal length, aperture, and ISO. The three most popular sensor sizes from smallest to largest are: Micro Four Thirds (MFT), APS-C, and Full Frame (35mm). You likely have one of these sensor sizes.

The crop factor is the sensor's diagonal size compared to a full-frame 35 mm sensor. It is called this because when using a 35 mm lens, such a sensor effectively crops out this much of the image at its exterior (due to its limited size). Sensor size is the physical size (area, not number of pixels) of a camera’s image sensor, usually measured in mm width x height.
